Out of a gazillion travel videos in YouTube, there’s not a lot that’s fun to watch. Here’s one that’s looks professionally edited, featuring the best of Melaka, Malaysia in just about 6 minutes:

There are a number of promotional videos made for the Beijing Olympics. Here’s one of my favorites, featuring the song One World, One Dream:

travel planningI don’t know about you but it never fails to get me all giddy and excited after I’ve made the first concrete steps in planning a trip. Sure, just thinking about going somewhere, even surfing around the web for possibilities already gets me hyped up, but when I’ve actually made the first tangible step — a reservation, whether for a plane ticket or accommodation –that’s when the adrenaline starts pumping. And it won’t stop until I’ve set foot on my destination!

And that’s how I’ve felt since I made the flight booking to Bohol 2 days ago. I’m scouring the web for hotel deals, and it is fascinating how much information I was able to glean from travel blogs and travelogues from online diaries or personal blogs. I am sure I am not the only traveler consulting weblogs, and I can see that soon, blogs are really going to revolutionalize the way we plan our holiday travels. Sure, there are travel websites where travelers can submit their hotel reviews and photos, but nothing compares to the kind of stories people tell on their blogs. It’s more personalized, more insightful and sometimes possibly without knowing it, the writers convey a lot more information between the lines than other reviews normally do.

If you have a travel destination in mind and you’d like to read anecdotes and stories from other people who’ve been there, do a blog search using Technorati or Google Blog Search. Although some blog entries would include photos and videos, you can turn to Flick’r and YouTube, respectively, if those are what you’re after.

Have you ever used blog entries to make your holiday plans? How useful do you find blogs in choosing your hotel or planning your itinerary?

I love this promotional video from the Hong KongTourism Board, not just because it showcases the best places and events one can experience in Hong Kong, but also because it offers a fresh approach compared to the usual tourism videos. Whether you’re in Hong Kong for business, shopping, or sight-seeing with the family, you’ll surely appreciate this:

Join a selection of visitors as they explore Hong Kong in all its diversity — from the living culture of its fantastic festivals and East-West heritage, and its stunning vistas and great attractions, to its unbeatable shopping and superb dining. These are moments you’ll want to experience for yourself.

I stumbled upon this video of Sri Lanka, which was supposedly first shown as a documentary at the National Geographic Channel.

An absolutely refreshing view of the country, one that not many are lucky to see and experience.

From the thousands of travel videos uploaded in youtube, it makes it difficult to discover treasure like this. Join Tyson Sadler as he explores India and Nepal with his brother and best friend.

Great clips, great music, great annotation… 10 minutes of a real great documentary! I love it!

BBC is my tv channel of choice when it comes to news. I love even the commercials, especially when they show tourism video clips. Here’s one from Incredible India:

In just one minute, you get to see how rich India’s culture is. If that leaves you wanting more info on travel destinations in India, have a look at the official national tourism website, Incredible India.

When someone comes back from a trip, we eagerly listen to their stories. How white the beach was, how nice the hotel has been, how sumptuous the food was, and all the exciting little details. But, no matter how skilled the story-teller is, don’t we nevertheless look for photos, or even videos of the trip? Maybe it’s a natural instict, especially for travel enthusiasts, to see the place for themselves, if only on stills and videos.

And that’s why I love YouTube. If you look hard enough, you find gems of videoclips that, sometimes even without words, takes you to the place and let you see the place for yourself… in motion. You’ll have to weed out through so much trash, but if you’re lucky, you’ll find some that impart so much more than hundreds of words strung together.

Here’s one I found, showing images of Shanghai:
