Singapore Airlines and SilkAir’s Zonal Concept for Excess Baggages

Starting this month, passengers of Singapore Airlines and Silk Air with baggages in excess of their allowance can now have an idea how much charges they will incur even prior to checking in.
Currently, customers are charged 1.5 percent of the highest one-way Published Economy fare for each excess kg. With the new excess baggage policy, excess baggage charges will be levied across a zonal system, based on the originating region and the disembarking region.

Japan seems to be tightening security measures at the airports and has started fingerprinting and photographing foreigners as they arrive.
Nearly all foreigners age 16 or over, including longtime residents, will be scanned. The only exceptions are diplomats, government guests and permanent residents such as Koreans who have lived in Japan for generations.
The fingerprints and photos will be checked for matches on terrorist watch lists and files on foreigners with criminal records in Japan. People matching the data will be denied entry and deported.

Four Thai Airlines Shift Operations Back to Don Muang Airport

A few days ago, I hinted at some airlines being re-routed to the old Don Muang Airport while the new Suvarnabhumi Airport gets the necessary repairs. Latest report has it that so far, effective March 25, four airlines will make the shift, making a combined 71 flights per day to/from Don Muang airport:

Thai Airways International (domestic routes)
Nok Air
One-Two-Go
PB Air

Two other Thailand-based budget airlines, Thai AirAsia and Bangkok Airways, will continue to operate their flights at the Suvarnabhumi airport. More details from the Suvarnabhumi Airport Guide.

Don Muang Airport in Bangkok to Re-Open to International Flights

If you’re heading to Bangkok sometime in April and beyond, and you think you’ll land on the newly opened Suvarnabhumi airport, well, don’t be so sure. Just today, the Thai government has decided that Don Muang will be re-opened for international flights. Some airlines will be re-directed back to the old airport to ease air traffic while some runways and other facilities at the Suvarnabhumi airport are being repaired. will be closed for repairs.
