Playing Tourists at Home

Playing Tourists at Home

Sometimes, it takes visitors to rouse you from your day-to-day activities and see more of interesting spots in your own locality. That’s what I’ve been up to the last several days (and the primary reason why it’s been slow going here at Let’s Visit Asia), playing tour guide to my mother and aunt who are visiting from overseas.
It turned out that there’s quite a number of activities here in Singapore for traveling seniors, afterall. It’s just that I’m used to moving around with kids in tow, so I’ve been more familiar with kid-friendly places rather than places to go for …read more

Trekking in Nepal on HD Video

Trekking in Nepal on HD Video

The following entry is written by Guest Blogger Tyler Bell, a blogger, vlogger, and sometimes English teacher living in Japan. You can read about his travels at his personal site www.tylerbell.net.
On May 28, 2008, Nepal elected to end 240 years of monarchy rule, giving 60-year-old King Gyanendra 15 days to pack up and clear out. The move comes after an increasing loss of power for Nepal’s royal family. In 2001, the crown prince went on a shooting spree that left the King, Queen, and himself dead. By 2006, concessions were forced upon the monarchy that ended Nepal’s status as a …read more

Picking Up Bugs on the Road

Picking Up Bugs on the Road

Yowza, half of the week is over and I haven’t written a single entry here at Let’s Visit Asia. Apologies for the nth time, but my 2 month old daughter was at the hospital for some respiratory viral infection. When the doctor said that she probably picked it up from someone at home as she could have gone shopping for it, I said, well, we can’t be too sure of that.
Unlike the locals who keep their babies at home for the first few months, my daughter’s been around since the day we were discharged from the hospital. And even if …read more

Stuck in Boracay During Typhoon Frank

Stuck in Boracay During Typhoon Frank

I know many who would say that being stuck in Boracay for a week or so would be their idea of paradise. But in a typhoon?!?
How does it feel like to be stuck in the middle of a typhoon? Well, if you’re housed in a stable dwelling and you’re stocked with food and drinking water, then there’s nothing to worry. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the sounds of the wind and pattering (or battering?) rain against your windows. Now if you’re witnessing that scene from a beach hotel window because you were planning to have a few days of sun, …read more

Palawan Paradise

Palawan Paradise

The following is written by guest blogger, Catha, a Filipina expat scientist in Switzerland working on genomics, but whose mission in life is to promote Adobo. Catha blogs at Cat’s Walks and Bubut’s House.
Paradise. That’s the first word that came to my mind as we entered Coron Island through the Blue Lagoon. This magnificent landscape composes of steep limestone cliffs, clear aquamarine waters and blue skies. Definitely this is one of the most beautiful places I have seen in my life. Pictures just can’t do justice to the vivid colors of Coron Island.

Thankfully there are …read more

Traveling Mamas

Traveling Mamas

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, here’s a travel blog dedicated for you moms out there: the Traveling Mamas.

Being a mama myself (2nd time, soon!), I know how traveling can be challenging, cumbersome at times, when you have one or more children in tow. Trips need a bit more planning, and if you want to make the most out of it, you have no choice but to make sure that your destination is child-friendly. If the little ones are bored, or if your destination is not suitable for your the age and interests of your kids, well, might …read more

Pondicherry: French India

Pondicherry: French India

Would you expect to find a taste of France in… India? If you think it unlikely, then you probably haven’t heard of Pondicherry (Puducherry).
On the southeastern coast, about 150 miles south of Chennai, Pondicherry is, for an Indian city, tiny. Just about a million people live there, mostly in the types of charmless, three- and four-story concrete buildings erected all over the poorer parts of Asia. But near the Bay of Bengal, the cityscape changes drastically. Soon you see tile roofs and wooden shutters, balconies and colonnades, wide brick streets and pastel Catholic churches — the neighborhood once known as …read more
