Preserving the Great Wall of China
Out of the oringinally-4,000 miles spanning the Great Wall of China, only a third remain standing, and there are only a few stretches open to the public. Yes, you’re allowed to climb and walk on the wall, even sleep on it.

But a big part of the wall is off-limits. Afterall, man, it’s centuries old, and some structures are crumbling!
Still, that doesn’t seem to deter some people. Some still insist of going to stretches that are not officially open to the public, and even holds parties there. Cool ? Not so. As the Beijing municipal government takes back the rights to manage the Badaling section of the wall, the government is determined to protect these cultural relic better.
The new rules prohibit driving vehicles on the wall or group activities like parties. Individuals who break the new rules face fines of 10,000 to 50,000 yuan, or $1,265 to $6,327, while institutions can be fined 50,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan, according to the government’s Web site.
Beijing is lovely in at this time of the year, and should you consider visiting, here’s a travelogue to guide you to enjoy the panorama of the Great Wall of China. Penalty free, of course.
