Scams Tourists Should Avoid, In Asia or Elsewhere

by Ruth on August 14th, 2006

Whereever in the world you travel, there are schemers. Wretched people intent on pulling a trick on you. Be prepared. Know what you’re up against, and you’re already one step ahead. Here are some of the most common scams to look out for (in Asia or elsewhere):

Rick Steves Silk Money BeltPickpockets, thieves, snatchers. Beware of people who try to distract you, asking for directions or the time. Keep an eye on your pocket and keep your bag close to yourself when in crowded places (a money belt is practical, comfortable and secure way to keep cash, cards and important documents safe). Remember, your skin color, your height, or the fact that you’re holding a travel guidebook may reveal that you’re a tourist, and therefore, a prey for these scumbags. They may be able to spot you, but if they know you’re equally aware of them, they might just leave you in peace.

Taxi Scams. Be on the look-out for broken meters, tampered meters, and the scene outside your window, in case the driver’s taking you for a joyride, instead of direct to your destination. Be wary of hotel recommendations from your driver, too. Chances are, you’ll be paying his commisssion on top of the actual room rates.

Other scams to watch out for: Suspicious bills in restaurants, switches and fakes when shopping, tampered ATM machines, and more. Read this Fodor article for an introductory course. Keep safe!
