On A Budget? Travel During Low-Season!

by Ruth on July 7th, 2006

Touring Travel to Bangkok Thailand from SuperCitiesSummer is here, the sun is shining and it’s time to go for a holiday. But if you’re like us, who’d like to avoid crowds, and would like to save a few hundred bucks, why not try going during off season? Room rates as well as airfares are cheaper, and you don’t have to race at 6 in the morning to reserve a place down by the beach. Among Fodor’s Five Low-Season Savers is Bangkok, Thailand.

Peak Season: The peak season for tourism runs October through February, when prices are often twice what they are in low season (though hotels are still frequently booked). March through September can be both extremely hot, rainy, or both.

The Trade-Off: The King’s Birthday, on December 5, is Thailand’s favorite excuse to go crazy, march in parades and troop the colors. The Queen’s birthday, on August 12, is also over the top but thankfully less populous.

November’s Golden Mount Festival is the most spectacular of all Thai festivals, encompassing bazaars, parades, and fireworks. April’s Songkran, marking the Thai New Year, is no less merry but the rainy season guarantees smaller crowds.

Where to stay? Decent, comfortable hotels in Bangkok are generally quite affordable, but Fodor points to the low season promotional rates at Nai Lert Park Bangkok and the Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel. If these hotels still don’t meet your budget, don’t despair. Scour around the web. It’s not that difficult to find a three-star hotel for less than $50 a night.
