New Star Alliance Wing at Narita Airport Now Open

by Ruth on June 13th, 2006

I hate stop-overs. I know there’s a lot one can do to convert this “dead” time to do something productive, and in this age of technology, there are a lot of gadgets to keep one entertained and help the time pass by. But still, I hate stop-overs. Have I said it before? Well, I do. Especially when flying long distances, I just want to get there as fast as I can.

Lucky are those flying with a Star Alliance carrier stopping at Narita Airport in Tokyo: Beginning June, all Star Alliance carriers will now be stationed at the new South Wing of Tokyo’s Narita Airport Terminal 1.
Start Alliance Moves to New Wing at Narita Airport

Called the “one roof” strategy, all 10 member airlines will have a common check-in area, baggage screening system and departure lounges. This move is supposed to reduce connecting times to less than half the time it usually takes.

Considering that Tokyo is a busy hub and is often the stop-over airport for a lot of trans-Pacific flights, this system will surely save a lot of walking. At least you won’t have to run around the whole airport, looking for the gate where your next flight will take off from. Very convenient.

I just hope that they later tweak the flight schedules a bit such that the actual waiting time is further reduced. Otherwise, this strategy would find us with more time to burn than before!

*Participating Star Alliance member carriers: Air Canada, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, SWISS, Singapore Airlines, THAI and United. Air New Zealand is expected to join later.
