KLM Business Club China for Entrepreneurs
Business is booming in China. I know it, you know it, and the airline industry is definitely quick to act on it. Take, for example, the Dutch airline, KLM, which just established the “KLM Club China“, intended specifically for entrepreneurs active in the Chinese business market. According to their press release, KLM Club China membership offers access to:
- an exclusive network of entrepreneurs;
- an Internet platform to establish / maintain relations with business contacts;
- valuable business & information services, offered by partners. For example, a special telephone line has been set up from which business contacts can obtain Chinese address details for translation agencies, legal bodies, hotels, conference locations, route descriptions, etc.;
- relevant and interesting commercial and network-oriented events in both China and the Netherlands. KLM Club China will regularly organize meetings where entrepreneurs from different companies doing business in China can meet one another;
- contacts within local and international policy-making bodies.
In other words, membership to the club lets you in on important tidbits of information that will help make your business in China a success. Insider information for club members who can only go in per invitation. Call it exclusive. I call it somewhat clannish.
There are two other avenues to get into the club though:
1. Flying Blue frequent flyer program members who regularly travel to China have until the end of this year to register to join free of charge.
2. Email and plead your case to clubchina@klm.com.

They make it sound more exclusive (and more attractive, for some) by making it on a “per invitation” basis. Although, I doubt that businessmen — once they have established connection — would even use the Internet platform offered by KLM to maintain relations. At most, it COULD serve as a club where meet-and-greets are possible.
An interesting marketing ploy, though.
they do say that in business, who you know matters just as much as what you know. sounds like a good venue for networking…
