by Ruth on March 8th, 2006

The use to ask flight attendants to do it, but in most flights now, you just watch a video on the screen about flight safety. towards the end, as they announce imminent take-off, they ask you to make sure all cellphones and signal-emitting electronic gadgets are turned off.

There has been a big debate on whether cellphone really do interfere with the aircraft’s navigation equipments. New research suggest that cellphones on airplanes do pose a danger.

“It reported that there were emissions in the GPS band capable of causing interference,” the article said. “Disturbingly, though, they were low enough to comply with FCC emissions standards.

“Our data and the NASA studies suggest to us that there is a clear and present danger: Cell phones can render GPS instrument useless for landings.”

Because pilots increasingly rely on GPS technology to aid in landings, such interference could be potentially catastrophic.

Now they are talking of ways to make sure that passengers comply: from absolute banning, to radio frequency monitors on board. Does it really have to reach that point? Is it really that difficult for you, as a passenger, to keep off your phones for the duration of the flight?
