Bangkok/Koh Samui Travel Plan
The Travel Plan Idea Blog (ok, how generic a title can you get?) recently posted a vacation plan for Koh Samui. He included a night in Bangkok, since you’ll probably enter Thailand via Bangkok anyway, and it would make sense to spend at least a night there, instead of devoting a full day just for getting to Koh Samui alone.
James recommends Le Meridien, but really, for a short transit, you can also book a lesser-starred hotel. There are a lot of two- to three-star hotels in Bangkok that are respectable and would satisfy the basic creature comforts.
When you get to Koh Samui, here are some of the activities James recommends, when you’re not sunning yourself and lounging by the beach:
- Elephant Trek (may be difficult and physically strenous that you expect, though)
- Hike up Namuang Waterfall
- Sea Kayaking at Ang Thong National Marine Park
- Visit the Buddha at Wat Phra Yai

Surely the best piece of advice is not to go to Koh Samui. Thailand has many, for the most part unspoilt locations, but Samui is not one of them.
Samui has an airport…that is its greatest weakness and its greatest strength - it’s package tour hell.
It’s more like Ibiza than Thailand…all British pubs and all day breakfasts. By all means fly to Samui but then get a boat to any of the surrounding islands all of which are a great deal more beautiful.

Actually, I’ve never been to Koh Samui. Le Meridean was recommended by a wealthy friend and Lamai-Wanta was recommended by a not so wealthy friend. Same thing with the Bnagkok hotel, The oriental, since I don’t remember the name of the one I stayed in and might not recommend it anyway…

hi omih! thanks for dropping by… re: koh samui, i guess to each his own. some people steer clear of bali, for exactly the same reasons. i guess it depends who people define “holiday”…
thanks for the clarification, james. re:bangkok hotels, i can recommend maruay garden hotel, a lesser known 3-star hotel, just a few minutes from the airport. the buffet breakfast is fabulous and has the amenities a transit traveller will ever need.
