“Best Airline To Asia” Comes With A Price

by Ruth on January 21st, 2006

Malaysia Airlines is trying to reduce costs. Guess who’ll take the brunt? The passengers, of course!

Malaysia Airlines will charge a fee for issuing tickets for international routes, increase insurance charges as well as levy a higher fuel surcharge from Feb 1 as part of its cost reduction efforts.

First there’s the introduction of the “administration fee”:

  • Between Malaysia and other Asean countries: US$3.70 (RM14) per sector
  • Tickets issued outside of Mlaysia for travel within malaysia: US$3.70 (RM14) per sector
  • For travel between Malaysia and North Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and North and South America: US$7 (RM26.60) per sector

Ok, that ain’t much, but then add that to
insurance charges (for all international sectors would be increased to US$5 (RM19) per sector from US$1.25 (RM4.75) per sector), and increased fuel surcharges (up to $50 per sector) and it’s no trifle change anymore.

Is it still worth it to fly Malaysian Airlines, then? Well, the 2006 Travel Weekly Globe Awards just awarded Malaysian Airlines as “Best Airline To Asia”, so for long-haul flights, it might be acceptable to pay these additional charges. For short flights within Asia, personally I don’t mind flying low-frill though.
