ChinesePod: Chinese Lessons On Your iPod

by Ruth on November 1st, 2005

Next to German, I think Chinese must be one of the most difficult languages to learn. And knowing not a word beyond “Ni Hao?”, I can think of just a few nightmares worse than getting lost in non-English-speaking parts of China. But alas, perhaps there’s hope for people like me:

ChinesePod gives out free daily podcast mandarin lessons. Here’s an example of a guide in using the proper tone when speaking in Chinese:

Don’t you take that tone with me…wait, please do. Yes, the tones in Chinese are tricky, yes, you’re still not completely clear on them and yes, it’s Ken and Jenny to the rescue. You don’t realize how important this lesson is until you accidentally tell the taxi driver that you want to “go to the bedroom”…saucy, indeed.

The entry then invites you to download the lesson in mp3 format to learn how to say it properly.

The greatest thing about this? You can download everything on your portable media device (phone, mp3 player, pda), plug the earphones, and talk like a pro! You can request a podcast, say, to teach you how to haggle for those silk pajamas, and head back to the market to practice your bargaining skills. At the very least, your efforts might charm a few bucks off the price!
