Asian Christmas, Anyone?
Several years ago, a German colleague who couldn’t come home for Christmas flew to Malaysia instead of staying in the Philippines for the holidays. He said that if he couldn’t have the traditional Christmas celebrations he’s used to in Germany, then he’d rather go somewhere where Christmas is not celebrated at all. I thought that was, well, Scrooge-like.
So there’s no chance of a white Christmas and people assemble their Christmas trees themselves–literally, as in, screwing plastic branches to a main pole– but Christmas in Asia can be just as festive, if not even more. The food, the shopping, the excitement! You’ll just have to be there to appreciate it!
But why not spend Christmas as usual–Santa, snow and all the trimmings– get it over and done with… and then! Head on to Asia to make the res of the winter just a wee bit shorter. I know a few people who’ve ben doing exactly just that. It doesn’t just get them the best of both worlds, but practically speaking, well, airfares are also usually considerably cheaper if you travel AFTER December 25. ;)
So go get your calendar and get planning. The Christmas countdown have begun!
