Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels: Openings, Closings, Renovations

by Ruth on September 28th, 2005

I just got my newsletter from asia-hotels.com urging visitors to the region this autumn to book their hotels early. Apparently, there has been a lot of changes going on in Hongkong and Shanghai hotels, partly attributed to the opening of Hongkong Disneyland. I would like to share this snippet:

In Hong Kong, the Mandarin closes its doors for a long-awaited refurbishment in December. Next-door, The Landmark, a boutique-style Mandarin will open in September. The iconic 396-room Four Seasons, sitting on the IFC site in Central and with stunning views over Victoria Harbour, will open around the same time. At the other end of the spectrum, Holiday Inn is launching their ‘Express’ product in Causeway Bay, whilst round the corner in Happy Valley, the Cosmopolitan with its 455 rooms is already open. Disneyland, on Lantau Island, has two hotels with over 1,000 rooms but the latest reports say they are pretty solid with reservations right into 2006. On Tsing Yi, the Mexan and Rambler hotels are opening with a 3rd on the way – combined they have a massive 1,880 rooms, mainly in the 3 star category. Nearer the airport, Citygate is opening in Tung Chung, whilst right in the heart of Central, in throbbing Lan Kwai Fong, two new hotels are slated to open later this year. In all, some 7,000 new rooms will be on stream by the end of 2005.

In Shanghai, the story is similar – new icons have opened, such as the remarkable JW Marriott in Tomorrow Square, with its superb views and the Westin, down the road with its Banyan Tree Spa and spectacular glass staircase. Shangri-La is extending its flagship property and there are a staggering array of 3 and 4 star properties popping up all over the city.
