Post-Tsunami Asia Awaits

In a report jointly published by Visa International Asia Pacific and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), it was revealed that tourism in the Tsunami-hit areas in Asia , particularly in Phuket, are still struggling to recover. Tourist arrivals are down 40% and spending 30% less.

PATA President and CEO Mr Peter de Jong said it was time for travellers and the travel industry to rally behind the destinations.

It is understandable that some travellers, particularly from Chinese cultures, may have some concerns about travelling to destinations where many lives have been lost,” he said. “But we cannot help these communities get back on their feet by staying away. The best thing we can do now is continue to inform tourists that it is appropriate and supportive to visit, and that they will have a great holiday experience.

Airlines and hotels are being urged to offer attractive rates, and scanning through the offers available on the web, they really are rock-bottom. I think it’s just that tourists from America and Europe would have planned their holiday around half a year in advance. That would have been during that time when Asia was still reeeling in the aftershock of the Tsunami, and tourists would have been unsure whether Asia would be ready by summer July-August). But, for sure, towards the end of the year, tourism will pick up again, with visitors escaping cold winter months in the northern hemisphere.

So, if you intend to spend a hot, tropical Christmas, avoid the rush, and make sure you book soon!
