Tokyo to Los Angeles in Four Hours?

by Ruth on August 23rd, 2005

If the $10 million protocol for Japan’s successor to the Concorde will succeed, it may cut travel time from Los angeles to Tokyo into a span of just about four hours. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will launch the experimental craft, designed to zoom at twice the speed of sound, at Australia’s Woomera test range between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15. Japan hopes to introduce regular flights by 2020. See CNN report here.

Naturally, the prospect is tempting. Imagine the time you save and can use to do other fruitful endeavors, instead of being cooped in transit. But if the airfares are as much as the Concorde’s were (was it $6000 one-way from Paris to NY?), business travellers may able to afford it, but I’m not sure how popular this will be to leisure travellers.
